Freshman Admitted Student Checklist

Now that you're accepted to UND, it's time to get started on your next steps. Please check your email frequently for communications from UND.

Use the Admitted Student Portal to see who your admission rep is and get started on your first-year freshman checklist. Your personalized checklist will be updated as you complete key steps. Login in using the same email and password you used for your admission application.

Steps After Being Admitted

Confirm Your Enrollment (Required) ( Open this section)

Let us know you're coming to UND. To confirm your enrollment, you must pay a $200 nonrefundable deposit by the following priority deadlines:

You'll need to pay the $200 deposit before you'll be eligible to register for classes or receive your housing assignment, so it's best to confirm your enrollment as soon as possible.

Directions

• Log back in to your admissions application to pay your deposit, using the same email you used on your UND application.
• If you applied using the Common App or PowerSchool, you'll need to sign up using the same email address you used on your application.
• Refer to the How to Pay Your Enrollment Confirmation Deposit document for step-by-step instructions.

Deposit Details

• Required of all new freshmen who plan to enroll in classes.
• The $200 deposit is not an additional charge. It's a prepayment applied to tuition, fees or other charges on your UND bill.
• Nonrefundable, but may be applied to future terms if you're unable to enroll for the current semester. Call 701.777.3000 for details.
• If you're unable to pay the deposit due to financial hardship, please contact UND Admissions at 701.777.3000.

Claim Your Account (Required) ( Open this section)

To gain access to many of the systems you'll need as a UND student, you must activate your student account within the North Dakota University System.

To claim your NDUS account:

1. Go to UND.edu/claim.
2. Find your student ID number (also known as your EMPLID) on your acceptance letter or by following the steps under the Find My EMPLID menu.
3. Once you have your student ID number, click on Claim Your Account.
4. Follow the steps as indicated.

Once you've claimed your NDUS account, you won't have to repeat the process. Make sure to keep your username and password in a safe and secure place. You'll use this username and password for other UND systems, such as housing, class registration and financial aid.

Personal Email Account

Please check the personal email account that you used on your admission application frequently for communications from the University regarding financial aid, housing, confirming your enrollment, Orientation, course registration and more. You'll continue to get reminder emails about these next steps to your personal account from the Office of University Admissions until your first semester at UND begins.

UND Student Email Account

As you get closer to beginning classes at UND, you'll start to get emails from other campus departments to your official UND student email account. It's important to check this account frequently so you don't miss communications from the University.

After you've claimed your NDUS account, follow the directions to log into your UND student email account.

Once the semester begins, all communications from the University will be sent to your official UND student email account.

Apply for Housing (Required) ( Open this section)

As a first-year freshman, you're required to live on campus for your first full academic year or receive an approved exemption.

• Visit housing to learn more about the campus living requirement and to explore residence hall options.
• After you've claimed your NDUS Account, visit housing to find instructions for completing the online housing application.
• A $60 nonrefundable fee is due when you submit your housing application.
• Apply early! Priority for residence hall room selection is made for confirmed students on a first-come, first-served basis according to the date your housing application is received.
• See application open and deadlines dates for each semester on the calendar below.

Apply for Financial Aid (Recommended) ( Open this section)

The Free Application for Federal Student Aid is the only application UND requires to determine your eligibility for federal financial aid programs. The aid you're eligible to receive is determined from the financial information you provide in your FAFSA and the cost to attend UND.

Don't assume you won't be eligible for aid! Most students qualify for some type of aid, including low-interest federal student loans.

2025-26 Academic Year

Once the 2025-26 FAFSA opens, go to studentaid.gov to complete it by using your 2023 income taxes.

Funding is not guaranteed after the Feb. 1 priority deadline. Apply early!

UND's FAFSA school code is 003005.

Summer 2025

If you plan to take summer 2025 courses, you'll need to complete the 2024-25 FAFSA. You must be registered in summer classes before financial aid eligibility will be evaluated.

Find Scholarships (Recommended) ( Open this section)

Automatic Academic Scholarships

If you met the criteria and were accepted by the priority deadline of Feb. 1 for the fall semester, you'll automatically be awarded one of UND's freshman academic scholarships.

You'll receive notification of your UND scholarship award beginning in October or within two weeks from when you're admitted. Please note that official transcripts are required before scholarships can be awarded.

If you're admitted for the summer or spring semester, you may be eligible for other scholarships.

Scholarship Central

Now that you're accepted to UND, you can apply annually for 1,000+ scholarships with one application at Scholarship Central from Oct. 1 to Feb. 1 for the following academic year.

Non-UND Scholarships

Explore outside scholarship opportunities through a variety of sources including the federal government, the state of North Dakota and outside organizations.

You may accept non-UND scholarships without affecting your UND scholarships. (If you have a UND athletic scholarship, please contact the Athletic Department to determine if you can accept a non-UND scholarship.)

Steps After Confirming Your Enrollment

Register for Your Classes and Your UND Orientation Day (Required) ( Open this section)

The UND Orientation Program is a two-part process that prepares you for your first semester at UND.

1. Virtual class registration
2. On-campus Orientation Day

The process and timeline will vary depending on the semester you plan to start at UND.

• Submitting any college-level credits, ACT/SAT test scores, etc.
• Signing up for your virtual class registration date.
• Selecting a date to attend an optional UND Orientation Day in Grand Forks held in July.
• Taking the Math Placement Assessment (if required).

Spring Semester

• Class registration typically begins in November.
• Beginning in October, an academic advisor will text or email to get you started with the advising and class registration process.
• You’re encouraged to attend the UND Orientation Day held in Grand Forks on the Monday before the start of the spring semester.

Summer Semester

• Class registration typically begins in April.
• Beginning in March, an academic advisor will text or email to get you started with the advising and class registration process.
• You’re encouraged to attend an optional UND Orientation Day held in Grand Forks in July.

Send Updated College Transcripts and Scores to UND (Required if Applicable) ( Open this section)

Before you register for classes, it's very important that advisors are aware of any college-level credits you may have earned or may be currently taking.

If we don't have your official college transcripts, the credits you've already completed won't be transferred to UND.

College Credits while in High School

• If you attended a North Dakota high school and your college courses are from a North Dakota public school of higher education, you do not need to request a college transcript be sent to UND.
• High school transcripts do not include official information on college credits earned.
• High schools are not able to request college transcripts for you.

Updated College Transcripts

If you have any updated or final college transcripts since you've applied to UND, you must ask the college or university where you earned the credit to send your official transcript directly to:

Advanced Placement (AP) Credits

In order for UND to apply Advanced Placement (AP) credits appropriately, please ask the College Board to send your scores directly to UND.

College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) Credits

The College-Level Examination Program (CLEP) provides credit by passing appropriate CLEP Subject Exams.

Visit the CLEP website for more details on submitting your scores to UND. You also may schedule a CLEP exam through UND Testing Services.

Accept/Decline Financial Aid Awards (Required if Applicable) ( Open this section)

If you completed the FAFSA, watch for your personalized financial aid offer and UND Financial Aid Guide.

Your offer will be mailed out beginning in December for the upcoming fall semester or approximately two weeks from when UND receives your FAFSA information.

Make sure you complete the full financial aid process as soon as possible, but no later than at least one month before you start classes, including:

• Accept or decline your financial aid offer in Campus Connection.
• Complete Master Promissory Note and Entrance Counseling for Federal Direct Loans (if applicable).
• Set up your preference for receiving excess financial aid and other refunds in Campus Connection (if needed).
• Add an authorized payer to your QuickPAY Payment Portal account (if needed).
• Turn in any hometown scholarship checks to One-Stop Student Services. Please notify onestop@UND.edu of any anticipated external scholarships that you have been awarded.

Complete Residence Hall Room Selection Process (Required if Applicable) ( Open this section)

If you have completed your housing application for the upcoming academic year, signed your Room & Meal Plan Agreement and confirmed your enrollment with UND by March 1, you'll be included in the first round of Room Selection for the residence halls.

Your Room Selection time is based on the original date of your housing application.

Steps After Registering for Classes

Approximately Two Months Before Your First Semester

If you haven't already, make sure you have set up and logged into your UND student email account.

Once the semester begins, all communications from the University will be sent to your official UND student email account, so it's very important that you check your email frequently.

Submit Immunization Documentation (Required) ( Open this section)

All newly admitted on-campus and online students must provide required immunization documentation or request an approved exemption.

Required Immunization Documentation

• Two (2) doses of MMR (Measles, Mumps and Rubella) vaccination.
• One (1) dose of Meningitis vaccination given after the 16th birthday (if age 21 or younger).
  • Accepted brands of Meningitis vaccine include Menactra, Menveo and MenQuadfi.

  Order U Card (Required) ( Open this section)

  The U Card is your official UND identification and credential card. Carry it with you at all times.

  Your U Card provides access to many campus buildings, library resource materials, printing funds, as well as entrance to the Wellness Center, dining services and all athletic events.

  When ordering your U Card, make sure you follow the photo requirements or your photo will be rejected and you will need to resubmit it.

  *If you're an online student, you have the option to get your U Card, but you're not required to do so.

  Student Technology Requirements

  Whether you’re taking courses in the classroom or online, it’s important to have the right technology and equipment.

  Visit the University IT website for an overview of student technology requirements.

  Free Software

  As a UND student, you'll receive Microsoft 365 Apps for free, which includes Word, PowerPoint, Excel, OneNote, Outlook and more.

  You may install Microsoft 365 Apps on a maximum of five (5) home or personally-owned PCs / Macs and on a maximum of five (5) mobile devices. Office mobile applications are accessible on iPhone and Android phones.

  Technology Support Services

  Get acquainted with University Information Technology and the support services they provide to students through the UND Tech Guide.

  Purchase Parking Permit (Required if Applicable) ( Open this section)

  Permits are required if you're parking a vehicle to campus. Keep in mind UND is a walkable campus with free shuttle services, so you may not need a vehicle.

  Free Shuttle Services

  • Campus Shuttle: Takes you to all major parts of campus, Monday-Friday.
  • Aviation Shuttle: Runs 7 days a week from Ryan Hall to the UND Airport.
  • Off-Campus Shuttle: Free citywide bus system with your student ID.

  Housing Parking Permits

  • Housing parking permits are based off your housing assignment and are only valid in their specific zone.
  • Visit the Resident Housing Map to see where permits are valid.
  • Housing permits are also valid for the UND Airport and UND Wellness Center parking lots.
  • Housing parking permits are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. For each residence hall, there are convenient and perimeter options. The convenient zones will sell out.
  • If you do not see your desired permit option in the Parking Portal, you'll need to purchase a permit for your assigned overflow lot. You'll have the option to add yourself to the waitlist for a desired permit, but being on the waitlist does not guarantee you'll be offered that permit.

  Commuter Student Permits

  • If you're not living in the residence halls, you may purchase a Commuter Student Permit and park in designated "A/S" lots.
  • Student Parking Ramp Permits are also available for the ramp and "A/S" lots. The student ramp permits also sell out quickly.
  • Students living in UND apartments or Greek housing also have special permit options.
  • View the Student Parking Permits webpage for more information.

  Purchasing a Parking Permit

  • Annual permits for the upcoming academic year are available for purchase beginning July 15.
  • Annual permits are valid from Aug. 1 to July 31 of the following year.
  • Spring, summer or fall semester parking permits are also available.
  • You'll be able to access the UND Parking Portal two business days after registering for classes.
  • Once you purchase a permit, your license plate serves as your virtual permit.

  Make Plans to be at Welcome Weekend (Recommended) ( Open this section)

  About Fall Welcome Weekend

  UND Welcome Weekend gives all new undergraduate students an informal but informative introduction to college life and the opportunity to:

  • Move into UND housing.
  • Get acquainted with campus and the services offered.
  • Meet new people and enjoy activities.
  • Take your UND class photo.

  For the upcoming fall semester, UND Welcome Weekend is always held the Saturday, Sunday and Monday before classes begin.

  Residence Hall Move-In

  If you're living in the residence halls, make sure you review the moving-in process from Housing & Residence Life.

  Note that you'll need to sign up for a move-in time to help the University manage traffic and congestion during the fall Welcome Weekend.

  Accommodations

  If families need hotel accommodations, make reservations at visitgrandforks.com.

  Hotels may fill up, so make your reservations early.

  New Summer or Spring Students

  • If you're starting in the summer semester, you're invited to participate in the fall UND Welcome Weekend events.
  • If you're starting in the spring semester, you're invited to particpate in the UND Orientation Day the Monday before classes begin.

  Sign Up for Monthly Payment Plan (Optional) ( Open this section)

  UND offers interest-free payment plans to help you break down your total costs owed to UND into affordable monthly payments.

  Your options for a 3-, 4- or 5-month payment plan are determined by the date you sign up. The earlier you sign up, the more you can spread out your payments.

  There is a $30 fee for payment plan enrollment.

  Keep in mind the following:

  • Use our net price calculator to estimate your tuition payment to UND, after any financial aid is factored in.
  • If you received financial aid, it will be applied to your bill after the last day to drop/add a course for that semester.
  • If you don't have a payment plan in place, you'll need to pay any outstanding balance by the following dates to avoid a late fee:
    • Fall: Oct. 15
    • Spring: March 15

    Complete the FERPA Privacy Release Form (Optional) ( Open this section)

    The Family Educational Rights & Privacy Act (FERPA) establishes certain rights for students regarding the privacy of their academic and financial records.

    To allow UND to release detailed information about your account over the phone or to a non-UND email address, you must complete the FERPA privacy release form. This form allows UND to release the educational records that you designate and to whom you have allowed release to.

    FERPA release forms are recommended to be completed before your first day of your first semester at UND.

    You may complete your FERPA Privacy Release request on the eForms tile in Campus Connection .

    Complete Mandatory Online Training Program (Required) ( Open this section)

    Approximatley three to four weeks before the start of your first semester at UND, you'll receive an email to your UND student account with instructions on how to complete a mandatory online training program that covers topics such as:

    • Sexual violence
    • Alcohol and drugs
    • Fire safety
    • Campus policies

    Please discuss the implications with your family prior to coming to campus.

    Ensure All Final Official Transcripts are Sent to UND (Required if Applicable) ( Open this section)

    To verify high school graduation and any college credits you may have earned, you must submit all final official transcripts to UND.

    If you have any final official transcripts that haven't been sent to the UND Office of Admissions, please request to have them sent as soon as possible.

    Transcripts can be sent electronically through a secured electronic transcript service or by mail in a sealed envelope to:

    As a reminder, if you haven't already, please do the following as soon as possible:

    1. Complete these steps in Campus Connection (click on Student Self Service):
       • If you received financial aid from UND, take care of any holds or to-do list items.
       • Accept/decline your award.
       • Set up your direct deposit information for receiving excess financial aid and other refunds (if needed).
       • Add an authorized payer (e.g., family member) to your account (if needed).
    2. If you have accepted a federal student loan, you must complete Entrance Loan Counseling and sign your Mastery Promissory Note at studentaid.gov.
    3. Mail any scholarship checks by Aug. 15 (fall semester) or Dec. 15 (spring semester) to One-Stop Student Services.
       • Notify One-Stop Student Services of any anticipated external scholarships prior to the start of the semester by emailing onestop@UND.edu.
       • Checks must be payable to UND (or endorsed by the student) and include your student ID number.
    4. If you are receiving a New Freshman Scholarship from UND, make sure your final official high school transcript has been sent to UND prior to August 1st.

    Review Campus Connection, Blackboard and Hawk Central (Recommended) ( Open this section)

    You'll use a variety of different student systems throughout your UND experience. Before classes begin, familiarize yourself with these main systems and how you will use them.

    Campus Connection

    Campus Connection is the system you'll use to manage your student account information, including registering for classes, managing your financial aid and paying your bills.

    Before classes begin, make sure you go to Student Self Service within Campus Connection to:

    • Review your class schedule.
    • Complete your emergency contact information.
    • Add/update your student cell phone to receive UND texts.

    Blackboard

    For many of your courses, Blackboard will be an important and useful tool. Blackboard is an online system that gives you access to your course information, including syllabi, grades, handouts, presentation, quizzes and exams.

    It is important to check Blackboard regularly for course updates.

    Hawk Central

    Hawk Central is a tool that helps you do the following:

    • Create personalized graduation plans with your academic advisor.
    • Track your degree progress.
    • Plan your course schedule each semester.
    • Find people and offices around campus who can help you be successful, such as your instructors and academic advisor.
    • Schedule an appointment with an advisor.

    How to Login

    To access Campus Connection, Blackboard, Hawk Central and other systems you'll use as a student:

    • Select "Logins" at the top of any page while on the UND website.
    • Click the appropriate link.
    • Follow the login instructions.
    • Most often, you'll use your NDUS account information (e.g., firstname.lastname and password).

    Keep Track of Important Dates & Deadlines (Recommended) ( Open this section)

    Stay up-to-date with important academic dates and deadlines by checking out UND's academic calendars, which include:

    • Semester start / end dates
    • Add / drop deadlines
    • Billing due dates
    • Holidays

    You can use our interactive undergraduate academic calendar to save individual dates directly to your own calendar system.

    Purchase or Rent Your Textbooks (Recommended) ( Open this section)

    You have the option to buy or rent textbooks (new or used) as well as use financial aid to charge your books at the UND Bookstore.

    There are a few ways to identify your required textbooks or other course materials for the upcoming semester:

    • Log into Campus Connection to see your textbook list by class and order directly through the UND Bookstore .
    • Click Manage Classes > View My Classes.
    • On the bottom, click the blue "Buy My Books" button to pull up the UND Bookstore with all your required materials.

    2. UND Bookstore

    • Visit the UND Bookstore website to find your textbooks online. You can have them shipped to your residence or pick them up at the store.
    • You may also shop in person.

    Connect with classmates and find out what’s happening at UND.

    1. Visit the UND events calendar.
    2. Download the My UND app. Opt into the communication channels that interest you.
    3. Follow @UNDstudentlife on Instagram.
    4. Add your cell phone number to Campus Connection to receive student life text messages.
    5. Join your Facebook Group and ask questions of fellow UND students.
    6. Watch for the Student Life Weekly newsletter to arrive in your inbox every Monday during the academic year.

    Balancing a job while you go to college can be an excellent way to get involved, earn money, learn time management and develop your professional skills.

    There are thousands of jobs available on campus as well as within the Greater Grand Forks community.

    Sign your Wellness Center Waiver (Optional) ( Open this section)

    Fee-paying UND students who are enrolled in the concurrent semester, are eligible members who have access to the UND Wellness Center.

    A waiver must be signed annually by all users of the facility in order to use the UND Wellness Center. You can sign your waiver ahead of time, to save time on your first visit, and review the UND Wellness Center guidelines.

    • View your Campus Connection account to verify that you're being charged the correct tuition rate.
    • Review options to pay your bill. Payments can be made online through Campus Connection.

      Campus Connection Authorized User

      To permit someone else (family member) to view your tuition bill and make payments, you must set up an authorized user in your Campus Connection account.
